Carpentry Tools And Equipment Flashcards
What are the safety features on a table saw?
– Power to the tool. - On off switch/emergency stop button. – riving knife. – blade guard. - Push stick. – Dust extraction port.
What are the safety features on a drop saw?
– Power to the tool.
– Safety latch on trigger.
– blade guard.
– Dust extraction port.
What are the relevant angles when sharpening a chisel?
The grinding angle is 25°. The honing angle is 30°.
What are the best practice guidelines for cutting fibre cement products?
– Use tools that do not generate dust such as knives guillotines and shares.
-When using tools that do generate dust insure your working outside positioned so the wind blows the dust away from the operator.
– Insure appropriate respirators are worn and vacuums attached to the tool are fitted with a high efficiency particulate filter.
What is the order for concrete finishing tools?
- Screeds.
- Floats.
- Trowels.
- Power floats.
What are the basic ladder safety rules?
Ladders uses should:
- use only industrial rated ladders on worksites.
– Check ladders regularly for any damage.
– Set them up on level ground.
– Set up a single poll extension ladders at a 4:1 ratio.
– Make sure ladders extend at least 1 m above the step off point.
– Maintain three points of contact with the ladder.
– Avoid caring loads on ladders.
– Avoid reaching beyond a comfortable distance away from any ladder.
What is a notifiable scaffold?
Scaffolding that results in a potential fall of more than 5 m from the working platform is called notifiable and must be corrected, altered or dismantled only by someone who holds a current certificate of competence. WorkSafe NZ must be notified about the scaffold no less than 24 hours before the work starts.
When does scaffolding need to be inspected?
– Before they are used for the first time.
– Weekly as a matter of course.
– After they have had any alteration.
– After any significant weather event.
What records should be kept relating to scaffolding?
Scaffolds should have a register that documents inspections it is also good practice to have a scaffold information tag attached for easy identification by those working on it.
When can an elevated work platform be used?
An elevated work platform can be used in situations where it is impractical to use an erected scaffold system and should only be used by trained operators.
What are the considerations when deciding which elevated work platform to use?
– safety of use is the major consideration with elevated work platforms.
– The height and position of the area requiring access.
– The ability for a vehicle to manoeuvre.
– How level and firm the ground is.
– Whether movement is required in a single plane i.e. up and down or multiple planes i.e. up down in or out.
–Whether materials need to be lifted as well as workers.
In relation to modular scaffold what is the definition of the following terms: – Soleplates – screw jacks – casters – Height adjusters – ladder frames – plane brace – horizontal brace – Cross brace – diagonal bracing – stabilises – Working platform
Soleplates – For use when erecting scaffold on soft ground. I soleplate should be placed under the leg of each scaffold to stabilise the base.
Screw jacks – are similar to height adjuster’s are used to level scaffolding not a fixed with casters.
Casters – are the wheels at the base of the scaffolding system.
Height adjusters -Are attached to the casters and are used to level out the scaffold system by adjusting the height of each leg individually.
Ladder frames – are the ends of the scaffold system which the casters are inserted into.
Plane brace – a length of bracing attached Diagonally from one leg of the ladder frame to the other at the same height.
Horizontal brace – a length of bracing attached horizontally from one leg of the ladder frame to the other at the same height.
Diagonal brace - a length of bracing attached diagonally from one height to a lower height at the opposite end of the ladder frame.
Cross brace – similar to that of diagonal brace except the bracing extends diagonally between both corners of the ladder frame
Stabilisers – length of bracing running diagonally from the corner of each letter frame to provide it with more support.
Working platform – The working platform requires enough platform components to fill the gap between the letter frames and should have one access hatch.
