Carolus Linnaeus Flashcards
What was Carolus Linnaeus’s occupation?
He was a swedish botanist/physician that collected plants for curative purposes.
What modern system of classification did Carolus Linnaeus contribute to? What else he did contribute to classification?
Taxonomy. He also developed binomial nomenclature, (The two name system)
How many different species exist? Why do all scientists need to use a common language or classification?
8.7 million, so that scientists can collaborate freely. ( give or take about 1.3 million as we add estimates of uncatalogued species)
In the 1700’s what were the classifications of life?
Plantae and Animalia
In the late 1800’s what were the classifications of life?
protista,Plantae,and Animalia
In the 1950’s what were the classifications of life?
Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia
What are the eight taxonomy levels.
and what acronym does Jones use to represent it?
Domain (Dear) Kingdom (King) Phylum (Phillip) Class (came) Order (Over) Family (For) Genus (Great) Species (soup)
in the 1990’s what were the classifications of life?
Bacteria Archaea Protista Fungi Plantae Animalia
what classification of all bacteria like life was broken into bacteria and archaea in the 1990’s?
monera
what two domains and kingdoms are only separated by the chemical make up of their cell wall? what was the difference?
Bacteria and archaea are separated by the bacteria’s cell wall of Pepto glycan.
What is taxonomy?
the branch of science concerned with classification.
what is binomial nomenclature?
The system of nomenclature (Naming) where two names are used to describe a species. (Genus and species)
What are the three domains used as classification in taxonomy?
bacteria, archaea ,eukaryota
What are the 6 kingdoms in taxonomy?
archaea bacteria Protista Fungi Plantae Animalia
What is the Protista kingdom used for in taxonomy?
A catch all for things that do not fall into other groups.
