Carol to St Stephen Structure Flashcards
1.
Based off the medieval carol, ‘Eya Martyr Stephanae’ (burden + 3 verses)
2.
Through Augmentation and Fragmentation, the piece evolves melodically and structurally
3.
Men’s choir chanting 10 short motifs - derived from the original carol
4.
Each member is allocated a specific amount of times to perform each motif before moving to the next motif
5.
After 10 motifs, the soloists begin singing the verses for the motifs
6.
While the soloists sing, the women’s choir imitate augmented manipulations of the verse
7.
Men continue to perform fragments derived from the burden
8.
Altogether, the performance continues to build an extremely dense polyphonic structure until the soloist dies out at the end of the piece
The imitation
if often very close (less than a bar apart) however it is never perfect imitation but rather something melodically or rhythmically similar
