Carol Ann Duffy Para 2 Flashcards
Main Idea 2
The parental persona’s narrow outlook on the child’s best interests is insinuated to have prevented them from achieving their hopes and dreams
Elaboration
In the poem, the parents are implicated to have taken coercive measures to prevent the child from pursuing passions.
Idea 1- Quote
The scornful imagery of “a Film Fun laughing itself to death in the coal fire,” represents the parents disregard of the child’s hopes and dreams, the celebrity comic novel acting as a metaphor for fame.
Idea 1- Explanation
Additionally the use of the verb “laughing” is able to delineate the mocking nature of the persona towards their daughter.
Idea 2- Quote
Cacophonous onomatopoeia, “Boom, Boom, Boom,” represents the indisputable authoritarian voice of the parent.
Idea 2- Explanation
The plosive “B’s” overshadow the more silent fricative sounds in the poem, such as “off,” “firm” and facts accentuating how easily the persona’s voice overshadowed their daughters interests for the sake of their own.
Idea 3- General
The idea that the parents are guilty of their coercive measures is confirmed in the last stanza of the poem, as flippant rhetoric “What does it matter now?” are able to foreground the parents lack of belief that their restrictive actions have impacted the child in any way. As a result the close minded approach of authoritarian parenting is able to be exposed.
