carnivores Flashcards
cursorial animals
animals adapted to run in a stable plane
duty factor
% of time foot is on the ground
how does turning slow down speed?
centripetal force works against you
ungulate prey
prey w hooves
whats faster rotary or transverse gallop and who uses what?
rotary, cheetahs use rotary and horses use transverse
why is cheetahs swing time faster
they have psoas muscle which aids in retracting hind limb faster
what do lions rely on for hunting?
power - they need to be close to prey bcoz they are big so cant run for endurance
increasing duty factor in turning means
more energy is dissipated into the ground therefore better
pronking
prey behaviour, jumping and changing direction in air
why dont predator chase slower prey?
slower prey is usually heavier and harder to kill so need a few predators to kill prey
