Caring for At-Risk Patients Flashcards
Bystander rights
If you witness an arrest in the US, you have the right to:
Document it on video, provided you do not interfere
Ask for officer identification and badge numbers
Rights within home
Saying “I do not agree to your presence here or to your search” has weight in court
You have the right to see the search warant, and if it is not shown or is not signed by a judge you have the right to dismiss officers.
DO NOT interfere with any arrests
Document any damages done with photographic evidence
Where to find a loved one arrested by ICE

Expanded referrals in social medicine
An individualized care plan for a woman with diabetes might include referrals to a food pantry and farmer’s market for purchasing fresh produce; referral to a community-based walking program, where neighbors help her up and down the stairs; sending prescriptions to a pharmacy that delivers medication to her home;
Things to never document
Immigration status (don’t even ask)
Public charge
Test which is intended to determine whether an applicant for a green card or visa may depend on the government for support in the future
At the moment, Medicaid, food stamps (SNAP), and section 8 housing benefits may be accessed without fear of affecting immigration status, however this may not always be true in the future.
Family Preparedness Plan
Helps families collect vital information in one place for an individual to be used if they are absent, like in the event of detention or deportation
Must identify an individual to temporarily adopt children prior to being deported, otherwise child will go into CPS and be inaccessible.
If a law enforcement official is at the hospital asking about patient whereabouts or information,
do not answer, just call security and say a law enforcement officer is here, not sure if they have a warrant.
Security will take care of it.
