Caries Interpretation Flashcards
What is the caries classification used at UMKC?
IC= initial caries
MC= moderate caries
AC= advanced caries
RSC= root surface caries
RC= recurrent caries
B/Li= buccal or lingual caries
- caries in the enamel layer
- rates from a demineralization defect at the at the proximal surface and can extend axially to contact the DEJ

Initial caries (IC)
Classify the caries:
Initial caries (IC)
- spreading vertically at the DEJ
and/or - extending axiallial greater than half way in dentin layer
Moderate caries (MC)
Moderate caries (MC)
Moderate caries (MC)
Moderate caries (MC)
Moderate caries (MC)
Classify the caries:
Moderate caries (MC)
- greater than or equal to half way into the dentin layer and can extend axially to contact the pulp:
Advanced caries (AC)
Advanced caries (AC)
Advanced caries (AC)
classify the caries:
Advanced caries (AC)
classify the caries:
Advanced caries (AC)
classify the caries:
root surface caries
- saucerized or scooped-out appearance
- 50% prevalence in geriatric population
- most common in buccal premolar regions, then followed by lingual and interproximal areas
root surface caries (RSC)
Classify the caries
recurrent caries (RC)
classify the caries
B/Li carries
- Difficult to localize on a single view
- may superimpose the pulp
B/Li caries
ICDAS
International caries detection ans assistent system
What categories are included in ICDAS?
E1, E2, D1, D2, D3
According to ICDAS, class icy the following caries:
Lesion within outer 1/2 of enamel
E1
According to ICDAS, class icy the following caries:
Lesion within inner 1/2 of enamel
E2
According to ICDAS, class icy the following caries:
Lesion within outer 1/3 of dentin
D1
