Caries Interpretation Flashcards
What is the caries classification used at UMKC?
IC= initial caries
MC= moderate caries
AC= advanced caries
RSC= root surface caries
RC= recurrent caries
B/Li= buccal or lingual caries
- caries in the enamel layer
- rates from a demineralization defect at the at the proximal surface and can extend axially to contact the DEJ

Initial caries (IC)
Classify the caries:
Initial caries (IC)
- spreading vertically at the DEJ
and/or - extending axiallial greater than half way in dentin layer
Moderate caries (MC)

Moderate caries (MC)
Moderate caries (MC)
Moderate caries (MC)
Classify the caries:
Moderate caries (MC)
- greater than or equal to half way into the dentin layer and can extend axially to contact the pulp:
Advanced caries (AC)
Advanced caries (AC)
Advanced caries (AC)
classify the caries:
Advanced caries (AC)
classify the caries:
Advanced caries (AC)
classify the caries:
root surface caries
- saucerized or scooped-out appearance
- 50% prevalence in geriatric population
- most common in buccal premolar regions, then followed by lingual and interproximal areas
root surface caries (RSC)
Classify the caries
recurrent caries (RC)
classify the caries
B/Li carries
- Difficult to localize on a single view
- may superimpose the pulp
B/Li caries
ICDAS
International caries detection ans assistent system

Phenomenon in which the dentin artifact simulates caries; the lesion is outlined by normal anatomic structures and it is a RELATIVE radiolucency
Interproximal “burnout”
What is going on in the following radiograph?
Interproximal burnout
What is going on in the following radiograph?
Interproximal burnout
What is going on in the following radiograph?
interproximal burnout
- Difficult to detect on radiographs due to small width of lesion and density of superimposing enamel
- (occlusal caries)
Incipient occlusal caries
- Broad-based thin radiolucent zone in dentin with no changes in enamel
- Noticed as a relative increase in opacity between pulp and caries
- (occlusal caries)
Moderate Occlusal caries
What is going on in the following radiograph?
Moderate Occlusal Caries
- Seen as undermined enamel with gross loss of tooth structure (occlusal caries)
Severe occlusal caries
What is going on in the following radiograph?
Severe occlusal caries
What is going on in the following radiograph?
Severe Occlusal Caries
