Incipient Stage
Reversible
Still in enamel
Hasn’t passed DEJ
Small (operative) stage
Caries gone into enamel
and has just started getting into DEJ (board lesion)
Moderate Stage
Past DEJ
Into Dentin
Funneling out
Extensive stage
Approaching pulp, so dentin tries to fight back)
Formed reparative dentin
Into pulp so the dentin is fighting back
Types of caries by location:
Pit & Fissure Caries
Pits and fissures on the crown –> occlusal surfaces of posterior teeth
Buccal and lingual surfaces of molars
Lingual surface of maxillary anterior teeth (most common places but it can happen anywhere)
Smooth surface caries
on crown –> on the surfaces that are pit and fissure free.
Proximal surfaces
Buccal and premolars
