Caries Flashcards
1
Q
problems of caries diagnosis
A
- carious lesions are difficult to see
- all caries are different, so no specific method or tool to diagnose all types of caries
- hence why no diagnosis method is 100% specific and sensitive
- a combination of tools must be used to diagnose carious lesions
2
Q
Radiography to diagnose carious lesions
A
- Bitewing or DPT radiographs
- bitewing more specific for carious lesion detection
3
Q
Orthodontic separating elastic diagnose carious lesions
A
carious lesions are sometimes in sheltered spaces such as in between teeth which are difficult to view with direct visualisation.
orthodontic separating elastic bands are placed in between teeth (for 4-5 days) which separate the teeth by mm’s, allowing dentists to view the interdental spaces.
4
Q
Translummination to diagnose carious lesions
A
Useful for diagnosis of proximal lesions on the anterior permanent teeth. Light passes through the teeth and demineralised teeth are usually less translucent.
