Caridovascular System Flashcards
Describe the Cardiovascular System
The cardiovascular system is a continuous circular body system that includes the heart and vascular structures
What are the three structures of the cardiovascular system and what is it purpose
Arteries, Veins, and capillaries it’s purpose is to transport blood throughout the body
What do arteries do?
Greatly assist in pumping blood throughout the body
Describe the Thoracic cavity
Contains the lungs and the mediastinum , the latter containing the heart, great vessels, thymus, trachea, and esophagus
Define heart
The heart is a muscular organ composed of specialized branches muscle cells that pumps blood throughout the body
How many chambers are in the heart
4
The 4 chambers of the heart are divided into what?
Two smaller upper chambers- right atrium, left atrium
Two larger lower chambers- right ventricles, left ventricle
Define septum
Is a wall that divides the heart into R and L halves
How many valves control the flow of blood through the heart
4
Name the four heart valves and their location
Tricuspid- located between the R atrium and R ventricle. It has 3 cusps or leaflets
Pulmonary valve- located between the R ventricle and pulmonary artery
Mitral valve- located between the l atrium and l ventricle. A.k.a. The bicuspid valve
Aortic valve-located between the l ventricle and aorta
What are arteries?
Arteries are large blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
What are capillaries?
The smallest of the vessels
What are veins?
Capillaries to form venues which combine to form veins
Define aorta
This is the largest artery in the body, which begins at the L ventricle
Define Circulation
Circulation is describe as either being systemic or pulmonary.
