How did the Cariboo Wagon Road leave BC in debt?

A

The cariboo road was finished in 1865, but the gold rush was already in decline. Leaving the colony of British Columbia in debt.

Why was the Cariboo Wagon Road built?

A

In 1862 James Douglas ordered the construction of the Cariboo Wagon Road. For a more efficient way to get to and from the Goldrush areas.

What’s the significance of Barkerville?

A

Bakerville was name after Billy Barker who struck rich on Williams Creek.

In the mid 1860s about 5000-10,000 people lived in barkerville.

In 1868 most of Barkerville was destroyed by fire and the damage was extensive. However, Barkville was rebuilt but the population was suffering and by 1920 barkerville was a ghost town.

In 1995 the government of BC decided to restore the town as a tourist attraction.
