Layout of a typical plantation estate?
A typical estate averaged 80 hectares. Most of the arable land was used for cultivation. The rest were used for provision grounds, pasture and woodland. Buildings included the grain house, accommodation for white employees, houses for the enslaved, hospital, jail, animal pens and factory buildings.
Average division of labour in the estate?
Men were preferred in the factory and in skilled jobs.
Women were enslaved domestics. They cooked, cleaned, served tables, carried water, looked after the planters children, healers, midwives and sometimes as religious elders.
Two methods of sugar planting are?
Trenching and holeing.

These are the quick and sudden changed that happen as a result of the change of the cash crop of the Caribbean from tobacco to sugar.
Advantages of sugar as a cash crop?
- Non-bulky.
- Easily transportable.
- Non-perishable.
Dutch contribution to the sugar revolution.
They provided capital, expertise, credit and goods, enslaved labor, shipping and markets.
Impact of the sugar revolution?
- The prices for land went up.
- The change in the white and black ratio of the population.
