Caren Flashcards
Inductive reasoning
Forming generalisations that may be probable but not certain
Hypothesis testing
Generate a hypothesis and make a decision on whether its true or not
Deductive reasoning
Reasoning to a conclusion from a set of premises or statements where that conclusion follows the assumption that those premises are true
Phil Johnson-laired
Made an observation then made a generalisation based on that observation
Hypothesis testing strategies
Conformation - search for evidence which verifies hypothesis
Falsification - search for evidence that disconfirms hypothesis
if fast food is taxed childhood obesity will decrease: modus ponens?
fast food is taxed
if fast food is taxed childhood obesity will decrease: denial of the antecedent?
fast food is not taxed
if fast food is taxed childhood obesity will decrease: modus tollens?
obesity does not decrease
if fast food is taxed childhood obesity will decrease: affirmation of the consequent?
childhood obesity decreases
valid inferences
modus tollens
modus ponens
invalid inferences
denial of the antecedent
affirmation of the consequent
Heuristic - analytic theory principles:
singularity - only a single mental model considered at a time
relevance - consider most relevant mental model based on prior knowledge and context
satisficing - the current mental model is considered by analytic system and accepted if adequate
feeling of rightness (Thompson et al )
evidence of early conflict detection
quick response then rate feelings of rightness then do a second response
peeps with low feeling of rightness would take longer to do a second judgment
