Caregiver-infant interactions Flashcards
What is reciprocity?
Responding to the action of someone else with a similar action
the actions of one partner elicit a response from the other partner. These responses are not necessarily similar like interactional synchrony
What is an example of reciprocity?
smiling - when a smile occurs in an infant it triggers a smile in the caregiver and vice versa
What did Jaffe et al in 1973 argue?
infants coordinate their actions with caregivers as if engaged in conversation
What did Brazelton (1979) argue?
Reciprocity is an important precursor to later communications
What is interactional synchrony?
a form of rhythmic interaction between an infant and a caregiver involving the mirroring of facial and body movements. This includes imitating emotions as well as behaviours
Give an example of interactional synchrony
for example Metzoff ‘s study showed interactional synchrony of tongue protusions
