Caregiver Infant Interaction Flashcards
Attachment
Emotional link between infant and caregiver both seem closeness and feel secure with each other (1) interactions begin attachment, responsiveness of the caregiver has a deep effect on the infant
Signs of attachment
Proximity
Separation distress
Interactional synchrony
Respond to maintain interaction, emotions and actions mirror each other + example
Meltzoff and Moore
2 week controlled observation of 40 infants, adult displayed three distinct facial expressions. Independent observer found link between facial expression and response
Reciprocity
Two way mutual process, take turn to respond to maintain interaction.
Alert phases signal infant is ready for interaction. Brazelton described as a dance.
Caregiver interactions Ao3, ecological validity
Research lacks ecological validity, may not behave as normal in lab (example) lowers external validity and cannot generalize.
Controlled environment 😀
High control over extraneous variables eg not having other adults in the room that may distract the infant. Cause and effect can be established increasing the internal validity
Practical applications 😀
Demonstrates the importance of interactions on later development, information can be used to encourage responsiveness of caregivers to minimize later issues
