What is an elective surgery
Voluntary
Example: Hernia repair that is scheduled a week away
What is an Emergency Surgery
Necessary in trauma cases in which serious consequences will occur if surgery is not done immediately
What is Palliative surgery
Surgery to relieve pain or complications to make a patient more comfortable.
Example: Removing a metastatic tumor to help pain
What is Diagnostic Surgery?
Done to provide data for a diagnosis of the problem.
Example: Biopsy of a mass
Reconstructive surgery
Done to restore appearance or function
Example: Mammoplasty after mastectomy
Curative surgery
Alleviates (cures) a problem
Example: Gallbladder removed full of stones causing blockage or pain
