Cards Flashcards
Symptoms of Hypoxia
Poor thinking, judgement, reasoning, memory and personality
Reduction of vision
Fuzziness or thick feeling in the head
Clumsiness
Euphoria
Blood becomes blue
Time of Useful Consciousness
18k FT: 15-30m
25k FT: 3-5m
35k FT: 45-60s
All AMSL
Hypoxia Prevention
Fly below 10k FT AMSL
Understand caused such as carbon monoxide, being anaemic, experiencing chest infection
Factors affecting tolerance to Hypoxia
Being fit
Free from disease and illness
Drug free
Being relaxed in a warm cabin
Non-smoker
Causes of Hyperventilation
Hypoxia
Anxiety or fear
Continued straining against g forces
Can also occur:
- pain
- loud noise
- vibration
- excessive heat
- air sickness
Causes of barotrauma
Air can be trapped during a climb
During a descent it’s the opposite, it will want to create a vacuum
Define Pulmonary Barotrauma
Trapped gases in the lungs while experiencing change in pressure can cause lungs to collapse
Define Decompression Sickness
Caused by dissolved gases emerging from solution as bubbles inside the body tissues during decompression
Cause of Decompression Sickness
Rapid increase in the pressure that surrounds you, of either water or air
Do not fly rules
12 hours:
Light drinking
24 hours:
Donating blood (GA)
Diving
48 hours:
Heavy drinking
Donating blood (Aerobatics)
Define The Leans
A strong sensation felt by the pilot as being in one attitude when all the aircraft flight instruments are indicating a different attitude
Define GiLoc
Loss of consciousness occurring from excessive and sustained g-forces draining blood away from the brain and causing cerebral hypoxia
Describe IMSAFE
Illness
Medication
Stress
Alcohol or drugs
Fatigue
Eating
Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide
10-20% : Nausea
20-30% : Drowsiness, headache, increased respiratory rate, dizzy
30-40% : impaired judgement, difficulty breathing, blurred vision, stomach pain
40-50% : confusion, blurred vision, shortness of breath, uncontrolled sleep, vertigo, loss of coordination, chest pain, memory loss
50% or more: seizure, unconsciousness, heart attack
Eventual death
Stages of Sleep
N1: 7m
N2: 10-25m /
N3: 20-40m - Deep sleep
REM: 90m - RAPID EYE MOVEMENT
What are the 5 Hazardous Attitudes
Anti Authority
Impulsivity
Invulnerability
Macho
Resignation

When a pilot approaches a runway shorter than they are used to, he has the tendency to:
Get too high on approach
The Eustachian tubes connect the
Middle ear to the back of the throat
When nitrogen bubbles form under the skin, it’s called
The creeps
The partial pressure of oxygen inside the lungs is less than outside, due to
The addition of moisture and carbon dioxide
Purpose of Eustachian Tube
Maintain equal pressure on both sides of the eardrum
Function of Joint and Muscle Receptors
Deliver movement information from the brain to the muscles
Define CFIT
Controlled Flight Into Terrain
