Q

Sinoatrial node (SAN or SA node):

A

A small mass of cardiac muscle found in the wall of the right atrium that generates the heartbeat. It is more commonly called the pacemaker.

Q

Atrioventricular node (AVN or AV node):

A

This node relays the impulse between the upper and lower sections of the heart.

Q

Bundle of his

A

A collection of heart muscle cells that transmit electrical impulses from the AVN via the bundle branches to the ventricles.

A

Muscle fires that conduct impulses in the walls of the ventricles.

Q

The process of the heart conduction system

A

1)SAN creates an impulse and this creates atrial systole. 2) impulse reaches AV Node. The AV Node holds this impulse for 0.1-0.2 seconds. 3) Impulse is sent down the bundle of his. 4) Then it will go into the purkunje fibres which then you will have ventricular systole so the ventricles will contract

Q

How does the heart control the rate at which it beats? 4marks

A

SAN creates an impulse and both atria contract (systole). Impulse reaches AVN. Impulse sent down bundle of his into purkuje fibres. Means you will achieve ventricular systole so all the ventricles are going to contract.
