Cardiovascular system - SCIENCE Flashcards
What are the names of the heart chambers?
Right atrium, Left atrium, Right ventricle, Left ventricle
What causes heartbeat sounds?
The valves from the atria to the ventricles closing, and the valves from the ventricles to the blood vessels closing.
In what order does blood flow through the 4 heart chambers?
Right atrium, Right Ventricle, Left atrium, Left Ventricle
Where does blood from the right ventricle go?
The lungs
Where does blood from the left ventricle go?
the aorta
What happens when the right ventricle and the left atrium push blood into the lungs?
The blood picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide
What are some places that blood goes after leaving the heart?
Head, arms, liver, intestines, kidney, etc.
What do Arteries do and what kind of blood does it carry?
Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart
What is Capillaries and where do they carry blood to?
Capillaries are small vessels that carry blood to body cells
What do Veins do and what kind of blood does it carry?
Veins carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart
What do the Pulmonary Arteries do?
The pulmonary arteries carry blood from the right ventricle to the right and left lungs.
What do the Pulmonary Veins do?
The pulmonary veins carry blood from the lungs back to the left atrium
What do Red blood cells do and look like?
They are small, round cells that carry oxygen
What do White blood cells do and look like?
They are large, irregular cells that fight disease
What do Platelets do and look like?
They are tiny fragments that help stop you from bleeding when you are cut
