Cardiovascular system (primary) Flashcards
How do you assess the cardiovascular system?
Heart rate
Pulse quality
Mucous membrane colour
Capillary refill time
Why should cardiac auscultation be carried out?
To determine if there is an audible murmur or arrhythmia present
What is the typical heart rate of an unstressed dog?
80-120bpm
A heart rate in excess of ___bpm should raise suspicion of an arrhythmia
220
What may give mucous membrane an inaccurate grey/blue tinge?
Fluorescent light
What are the 2 main pulse points?
Femoral and metatarsal
What should be assessed when feeling pulses?
Amplitude and duration
In what species does peripheral pulse quality have some correlation to systolic blood pressure?
Cats
What can a 1 second CRT indicate?
Peripheral vasodilation or compensatory mechanism for shock
What can a prolonged CRT indicate?
Peripheral vasoconstriction
When might femoral pulses be difficult to palpate?
Obese patients or in hind limb trauma
What parameters affect pulse quality?
Stroke volume
Cardiac contractility
vasomotor tone i.e. degree of peripheral vasoconstriction
