Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Heart chambers
The heart contains four right atrium right ventricle left atrium left ventricle these ensure that the blood travels through the heart in the correct direction the walls of the heart chambers contain much muscle that contracts and creates the pressure needed to force the blood through the bodys system of blood vessels
Heart
Pumps that are attached to each other right half is a pump that pushes blood that has very little oxygen to the lungs where Its oxygenated the left of the is a pump that pushes blood that is very rich with oxygen to all of the cells in the body
Right atrium
Receives Deoxygenated blood that has just traveled to all of the cells in the body from the right atrium the blood passes to the right ventricle
Right ventricle
Blood that comes from the right atrium passes through here which pumps the blood to the lungs
Left atrium
Receives the blood that has just traveled through the lungs where it was oxygenated from the left atrium the blood passes into the left ventricle
Left ventricle
Blood that comes from left atrium passes through here then pumps the oxygenated blood to all the cells of the body
Arteries
Blood vessels that transport blood away from the heart their wall is very thick so they can withstand the great pressure of the blood inside them
Veins
These are the blood vessels that transport blood back to the heart their wall is thinner then an arteries because the veins transport blood who’s pressure is quite low
Capillaries
Smallest of all blood vessels connect the arteries to the veins as blood flows through the capillaries oxygen and carbon dioxide pass back-and-forth between the blood and the surrounding tissue the walls of these vessels are extremely thin so oxygen and carbon dioxide can pass it is the capillaries that the wastes generated by the cells into the blood and the nutrients the cells require leave the blood
Lymph vessels
These tiny vessels transport a fluid called lymph fluid from the cells in the tissues to the lymph nodes they greatly resemble a blood capillary
