Cardiovascular System Flashcards
2 major arteries
aorta and the pulmonary artery
Artery
carry blood away from the heart under high pressure
Veins
carry blood to the heart under low pressure
Aorta
the major artery that supplies O2 rich blood
Pulmonary artery
artery that take O2 deficient blood to lungs
Branches of the celiac trunk
splenic, left gastric and proper hepatic artery
Splenic artery
provides blood to the spleen
Left gastric artery
provides blood to the stomach
Hepatic artery
provides blood to the liver
Collateral circulation
if there is a blockage in one artery another artery can compensate
3 parts of the aorta
ascending, arch, descending thoracic
3 parts of the arch of the aorta
Brachiocephalic, left common carotid, left subclavian artery
Brachiocephalic artery
provides blood to heart and head
Left common carotid
2nd branch of arch, provides blood to head and neck
Left subclavian artery
3rd branch of arch, provides blood to left arm
Branches of the brachiocephalic artery
right common carotid and right subclavian artery
Right subclavian artery
provides blood to right arm
Border where right subclavian artery becomes the axillary
lateral border of the first rib
Right axillary artery
supplies blood to armpit
Right common carotid
supplies blood to head and neck
Branches of the right common carotid
internal and external carotid
Internal carotid
supplies blood to brain and eyes
External carotid
supplies blood to meninges, scalp and face
Border where right axillary artery becomes the right brachial artery
distal border of teres major muscle
Right Brachial artery
supplies blood to the right arm
Branches of right brachial artery
right radial and ulnar arteries
Right radial artery
supplies blood to the radius
Right ulnar artery
supplies blood to the ulna
Branches of radial and ulnar arteries
right superficial and deep palmar arches, and right digitals
Descending thoracic aorta
provides blood to inferior part of the body
Border where descending thoracic aorta becomes abdominal artery
diaphragm
Abdominal artery
provides blood to abdomen
Branches of abdominal artery
celiac trunk, right and left renal, superior and inferior mesenteric, and common iliac
Renal arteries
supply blood to the kidneys
Superior mesenteric artery
supplies blood from intestinal tract all the way to colon
Inferior mesenteric artery
supplies blood to colon
Common iliac arteries
supply blood to ilium
Branches of the right common iliac artery
external and internal iliac
Right external iliac artery
supplies blood to lower extremities
Right internal iliac artery
supplies blood to bladder, urinary tract, uterus and prostate
Border where external iliac becomes right femoral
inguinal ligament
Right femoral artery
supplies blood to femur
Border where femoral artery becomes popliteal artery
adductor hiatus
Popliteal artery
supplies blood to knee
Branches of popliteal artery
anterior and posterior tibial arteries
Major veins
pulmonary vein and vena cava
Pulmonary vein
brings oxygenated blood from lungs to heart
Vena cava
brings unoxygenated blood to heart
Branches of vena cava
inferior and superior
Superior vena cava
brings blood from upper body
Inferior vena cava
brings blood from lower body
Jugular
brings blood from head, consists of internal and external
Venae comitantes
veins surround arteries for heat exchange purposes
Varicose veins
caused by valves in veins not closing all the way
Portal system
brings blood from the intestinal system to the liver for detox
Veins in portal system
splenic, superior and inferior mesenteric, and left gastric vein
Portal hypertension
increased pressure in portal veins due to obstruction in the liver
Esophageal varices
veins in esophagus have to much pressure and bulge
