What is the job of the CV system?
To carry nutrients and oxygen around the body and collect waste
What is teh Pulse?
A pressure wave caused by the pumping heart
What do arteries carry?
Oxygenated blood away from the heart
What do veins carry?
Deoxygenated blood back to the heart
What are some factors that can affect the Pulse Rate?
- Amount of exercise
- Age
- Emotions
- Body temperature
- Blood Pressure
- Pain
- Digestion
What is Stroke Volume?
The amount of blood pumped by the left ventricle into the aorta in one contraction
It is appromxiately 70ml
What is Cardiac Output?
Pulse Rate x Stroke Volume
What are the 2 Stages of Blood Pressure?
Systolic and Diastolic
What is Systolic Blood Pressure?
The period of the most force, where the left ventricle contracts and pumps blood into the pulmonary artery and aorta
What is Diastolic Blood Pressure?
The period of lowest blood pressure, when blood is rushing back to fill the heart
What are the 4 constituents of blood?
Plasma, Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells and Platelets
What does Plasma do?
Carries blood cells and digested food products
The food products are glucose, amino acids, proteins, hormones, enxymes
What do Platelets do?
Assist in the blood clotting process
What is Haemoglobin?
Protein molecules in red blood cells. Each contains iron and gives blood a chemical attraction. It carries about 5% of oxygen
What is Anemia?
The condition of having less red blood cells than normal
