Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What does the term cardiovascular system describe ?
What is this system responsible for?
The term cardiovascular system describes the heart along with systemic and pulmonary circulations and is responsible for circulation of blood around the body.
What are the two types of autonomic control?
Why are these controls used by the body?
The 2 types of control are sympathetic and parasympathetic.
Sympathetic response are used to expend energy more efficiently where as parasympathetic responses are used to preserve energy more efficiently.
What is meant by the term cardiac output?
Cardiac output is the around of volume pumped by the left ventricle in one minute.
What is the meant by the term stroke volume?
Stroke volume is the volume of blood ejected from the heart per beat approximately 70ml.
What is meant by a inotropic effect on the heart?
Inotropic effect means something affecting the strength of contraction this can be positive or negative. Positive has increased strength.
What is meant by a chronotropic effect on the heart?
Chronotropic described the effect on heart rate a positive effect increases the heart rate.
What is meant when the heart is said to be in systole?
Heart contracts ejecting blood into aorta and pulmonary artery.
What is meant when the heart is said to be in diastole?
Diastole is when the heart relaxes allow it to fill with blood from the vena cava and pulmonary vein.
What does starlings law demonstrate?
Starlings law demonstrates that if a resting muscle is stretched it will contract with greater force thus increasing its workload.
What is meant by a hearts preload?
A hearts preload is the initial priming tlir is the volume of blood present in the heart after it is filled during diastole.
What is meant by a hearts afterload?
A hearts afterload describes the volume of blood at the end of contraction (systole) and is determined by resistance encountered when ejecting blood.
What receptors does the parasympathetic nervous system work on to exert it effect when controlling the cardiovascular system?
The PNS acts on muscarnic receptors 2 and 3 to exert effect.
What receptors does the sympathetic nervous system work on to exert it effect when controlling the cardiovascular system?
The sympathetic nervous system will act on beta1 and alpha adrenoreceptors.
