Cardiovascular system Flashcards
About the heart
- organ about size of fist
- pumps blood round body
how many sides does a heart have and what muscle separates them?
2 - separated by wall of muscle called septum
role of right side of heart
- takes deoxygenated blood to lungs
role of left side of heart
takes oxygenated blood to body
Path of oxygenated blood to the body
lungs - PV - LA - BV - LV - A - Body (gives up O2, removes CO2)
Path of deoxygenated blood to the lungs
body - VC - LA - TV - LV - PA - lungs (gives up CO2, saturates O2)
how long does diastole last?
0.5 seconds - relaxation phase - filling of chambers
how long does systole last?
0.3 seconds - contraction phase - emptying of chambers
Describe diastole
- both atria fill with blood - AV valves closed
- Atrial blood pressure rises, forces open AV valves, blood flows passively into ventricles (SL valves closed)
Describe systole
- both atria contract forcing any remaining blood into ventricles - SL valves stay closed)
- both ventricles contract increasing ventricular pressure
- aorta + pulmonary valves are forced open (AV valves closed)
- blood forced into aorta - travels to body + PA where travels to lungs
