Cardiovascular Drugs Flashcards
What type of drug is Digoxin? What do these drugs do and what are they often used to treat?
. Cardiac glycoside
. Inhibits sodium-potassium ATPase to decrease heart rate
. Often used for AF, used to be used for HF but not anymore
What do diuretics do?
Increase water loss in order to decrease blood volume and thus decrease blood pressure
What type of drug is Ramipril? How does it work and what is it used for?
. ACE inhibitor
. Inhibits ACE to reduce production of angiotensin II to lower BP
What type of drug is amlodipine? How does it work and what is it used for?
. Calcium channel antagonist
. Block calcium channels so fewer APs to heart muscle
. Slows heart rate and causes blood vessels to dilate = lowers BP
What kind of drug is simvastatin? How does it work?
Statin, blocks enzyme that liver uses to produce cholesterol
What kind of drug is streptokinase? How does it work?
. Fibrinolytic anticoagulant
. Activates plasminogen to form plasmin, which degrades fibrin so it can’t combine with platelets to form a clot
What kind of drug is aspirin? How does it work?
. Antiplatelet
. Low dose aspirin inhibits cyclo-oxygenase (COX) so that platelets aren’t formed
What kind of drug is enoxaparin? How does it work?
Injectable anticoagulant (it’s a heparin), activates antithrombin III to bust clots
What type of drug is Warfarin?
Oral anticoagulant
