CARDIOVASCULAR DRUGS Flashcards
Drug class of hypertensive medication that lower BP by decreasing volume and a direct vascular
effect that is not yet fully understood
DIURETICS
MOA: Inhibit Na+/Cl- transporter in DCT
Other: cause moderate diuresis and reabsorption of
calcium
THIAZIDE: Hydrochlorothiaziade
SE of thiazide diuretic?
Hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis
and
HYPER-GLUC: HyperGlycemia,
HyperLipidemia, HyperUricemia,
HyperCalcemia
MOA: what anti htn?
Inhibit Na/K/2Cl transporter in thick ascending limb of
loop of Henle. (See the difference between thiazide)
Others: Powerful diuresis, increased calcium excretion
Loop Diuretics: Furosemide
SE of Loop Diuretics: Furosemide?
“OH DANG”
O-totoxicity, H-ypokalemia, D-ehydration, A-llergy to sulfa,
N-ephritis, G-out
SE of Clonidine?
Rebound hypertension
SE of Methyldopa?
Hemolytic anemia
Most commonly used maintenance meds for hypertension in
pregnancy
Methyldopa
SE of alpha blockers Prazosin, Tamsulosin (-zosin)
First dose syncope/orthostatic hypotension
DO NOT GIVE in acute heart failure. But this is used
in chronic HF to decrease demand
Beta Blockers
What drugs are used to control blood pressure in pheochromocytoma? (3)
Phenoxybenzamine, Phentolamine or Labetalol
MOA of hydralazine?
Alters intracellular Ca2+ metabolism.
Vasodilates ARTERIOLES = decreased AFTERLOAD
Non dihydropyridine CCB?
Verapamil and Diltiazem
NVD
Dihydropyridine CCBs?
-dipines
MOST EFFECTIVE VASODILATOR
Nitroprusside
