Cardiovascular Disorders Flashcards
What are examples of cardiovascular disorders?
Hardened arteries, hypertension (high blood pressure) and coronary heart disease
Who conducted the first study on cardiovascular disorders?
Melamed et al
What did Melamed et al do and find?
Reviewed clinical evidence to find that burnout resulting from prolonged exposure to work stress was associated with heightened levels of CVD. This illustrates a link between chronic stress and CVD
What does the first study on CVD show?
Suggests that damage can occur directly through bodily systems or indirectly through unhealthy practices
Who carried out the second study on CVDs?
Cobb and Rose
What did Cobb and Rose do and find?
Compared medical records of air traffic controllers (high stress) and other air traffic personnel (low stress) and found that the air traffic controllers had higher levels of hypertension, increasing risk of heart disease
What does Cobb and Rose’s study show?
Shows that chronic stress is linked with CVDs
What are four limitations cardiovascular disorders research?
- unethical to conduct experiments so evidence is correlational so cause and effect can’t be established
- evidence is mixed as most people who experience stressors don’t get ill at all
- individual differences that can affect vulnerability to CVDs
- more research needs to be conducted as may be other consequences
