Cardiovascular Disorders Flashcards
What sac is the heart enclosed in?
pericardial sac
What are the three layers of the heart?
epicardium (visceral pericardium)
myocardium (cardiac muscle)
endocardium (lining)
What are the four heart valves?
Atrioventricular valves: 1. Tricuspid 2. Mitral Semilunar valves: 1. Aortic 2. Pulmonary
What are three cardiac muscle characteristics?
No regeneration
Autorhytmicity
Thick LV wall
What is autorhytmicity?
Impulses to start contraction are initiated within the cardiac muscle
What happens during systole?
ventricles contract, blood forced up aorta and pulmonary artery, blood delivered to body tissues, atria relax
What happens to diastole?
ventricles relax, atria contract, blood forced back into ventricles
What happens at the alveolar capillaries during pulmonary circulation?
Exchange of O2 and CO2
