Cardiovascular Disorder Flashcards
How is the cardiovascular system different in children than adults?
- pulse, RR, BP, and hematologic values vary with the age of the chid
- chest walls are thin in infants and young children due to the lack of SC tissue and muscle tissue
What is a congenital heart disease?
- genetic, maternal, or environmental factors
–> malformed heart is not a problem in mom due to baby getting needs from placenta - biggest cause of death during the first year of life
What are the diagnostic tests used for congenital heart diseases?
noninvasive: electrocardiogram
invasive: angiogram, surgical intervention
What are the signs and symptoms of a suspected congenital pathology?
- FTT, poor weight gain
- cyanosis, pallor
- pulsation in the neck veins
- tachypnea, dyspnea
- irregular pulse
- clubbing
- fatigue during feeding or activity
What is an innocent murmur?
also known as “functional” or “physiological” murmurs
murmur= sound from turbulent blood flow within the heart
- happens in diastole, systole, or both
- reflect abnormalities in heart or vessel
- can occur in a NORMAL HEART in periods of stress
What are the four types of congenital cardiovascular defects?
- increased pulmonary blood flow
- decreased pulmonary blood flow
- obstruct blood flow out of heart
- mixed blood flow
