Q

Function of Thrombin

A

Multifunctional protease that is activated in the penultimate step of the coagulation cascade. 4 functions:

  1. Cleaves soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin monomers
  2. Activation of factor 12, which cross-links the fibrin monomers to form polymers
  3. Activates other coagulation factors, 11/5/8 - thereby producing a positive feedback loop
  4. Thrombin also binds to various receptors leading to the activation of platelet/ endothelial cells/ leukocytes (neutrophils + monocytes)
