Cardiovascular Disease Flashcards
What is cardiovascular disease?
Cardiovascular disease is non-communicable. It is not infectious and cannnot be passed on from person to person
Coronary Heart disease
fatty deposits cause coronary arteries to become blocked so less blood can get through which results in cells getting less oxygen and glucose and less respiration occurs and less energy is released resulting in pain, tiredness or a heart attack
What is cancer?
Uncontrolled growth and division of cells caused by mutations.
How do cancerous cells spread?
Cells from the tumour break off. They travel in the blood to other parts of the body and form new tumours.
What are the 3 types of blood vessels? and what are their direction of blood flow?
- arteries = carry blood away from heart
- veins = carry blood from organs to heart
- capillaries = carry blood to cells through organs
Transpiration Cycle
- Water is in the soil
- Water moves into root hair cell from soil
- Water moves up the stem in the xylem
- Water moves into leaves, still in the xylem
- Water can enter cells of the leaf for photosynthesis or it moves out the stomata into the air by evaporation.
What are the 4 main factors that affect transpiration:
- light intensity
- temperature
- air movement
- humidity
What are the 10 parts of a plant tissue?
- Upper Epidermis
- Chloroplasts
- Xylem
- Phloem
- Lower Epidermis
- Stomata
- Guard Cells
- Waxy Cuticle
- Spongy Mesophyll
- Palisade Mesophyll
What is the function of the stomata?
Allows C02 in and O2 out
What is the function of the waxy cuticle?
Reduces water loss
What is the function of lower and upped epidermis?
No chloroplasts so allows light to penetrate
Palisade mesophyll - function
many chloroplasts to trap lights to maximise photosynthesis
