Cardiovascular: Circulation and Blood Flow L1 Flashcards
The flow of blood is advection, associated with material exchange is diffusion, together they are?
Convection
Right heart goes to?
Lungs/Pulmonary Circuation
Left heart goes to?
Body/Systemic Circulation
Why are most cells and tissues vascular?
They have their own blood vessels to guarantee adequate and timely supply of oxygen.
What is an example of a part of the body that is avascular and why?
The lens of the eye is very thin and oxygen can diffuse across this short distance easily.
Oxygenated blood from the lungs arrives at the left atrium and then flows through what valve?
Bicuspid Valve/Mitral Valve.
What valve does blood flow out of upon leaving the left ventricle? Parallel or series circuit?
Aortic Valve and into the arterial system. Parallel.
What system finishes at the right atrium?
Venous system.
What blood vessels transport the deoxygenated blood to the right atrium?
Superior Vena Cava, Inferior Vena Cava, Coronary Sinus.
What is the valve disallowing blood to flow back from right ventricle to right atrium?
Tricuspid Valve.
What is the valve upon leaving the right ventricle?
Pulmonary Valve.
Pulmonary Circulation is in series or parallel?
Series
Do the systemic circuit and pulmonary circuit lie in series or parallel with each other?
In series
Why is the systemic circuit in parallel?
So that no organ receives carbon-dioxide rich blood coming from other organs, which is what would happen if it was in series.
What part of the systemic circuit is not in parallel?
The liver is the exception to this which is called hepatic portal system for the reason that the liver can process toxins and nutrients before they go to the rest of the body.
