Q

Which are the two main types of CCBs?

A

The two main types of CCBs are the dihydropyridine (DHP) and the nondihydropyridine (N-DHP) compounds.

Q

How do calci channel blockers act?

A

Calcium channel blockers (CCBs), also known as calcium entry blockers or calcium channel antagonists, are a heterogeneous group of drugs that selectively inhibit the influx of extracellular calcium through L-type voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs). When inward flux of calcium is inhibited, contraction of smooth muscle cells in peripheral arterial blood vessels decreases, arteries vasodilate, systemic vascular resistance (SVR) decreases, and blood pressure falls.

Q

What are the main differences between DHP and nonDHP?

A

The DHPs have more vascular selectivity than do the N-DHPs.

Q

How are the non DHPs classified?

A

The N-DHP drugs have either a phenylalkylamine (verapamil) or a benzothiazepine (diltiazem) chemical structure.

Q

Name the mean side effects of dihydropyridines?

because these are all potent vasodilators, headache, lightheadedness or dizziness, flushing, and peripheral edema can be seen in 10% to 20% of patients.
