cardiovascular Flashcards
function
- provide adequate circulation of blood through body
- transport oxygen, nutrients
arteries
- larger, thick walls
- carry blood away from heart into systemic circulation
arterioles
- very small
- branches off from artery
- carries blood away from heart to tissues and organs
capillaries
- smallest
- thin walls
- oxygen and nutrients from blood can travel through walls
venules
- smallest veins
- receive blood from capillaries
veins
carry blood towards the heart
aorta
- biggest artery
- carries blood from heart to rest of the body
vena cava
- biggest veins
- directly empty deoxygenated blood into hearts right atrium
mitral valve
regulates blood flow from left atrium into left ventricle
pulmonary valve
opens to allow deoxygenated blood to leave right ventricle and flow to lungs
aortic valve
opens to allow blood to flow from left ventricle to aorta
- keeps blood flowing in correct direction
tricuspid valve
controls flow of blood from right atrium to right ventricle
pulmonary veins
transport oxygenated blood from lungs back to heart
heart rate
number of contractions per minute
cardiac output
amount of blood ejected from each ventricle every minute
cardiac output =
stock volume x heart rate
stroke volume
amount of blood expelled by each contraction of each ventricle
systolic BP
when left ventricle contracts it pumps blood into aorta, pressure produced is systolic BP
diastolic BP
heart at rest following ejection of blood
