Focus of Pulmonary Rehab
> Improve exercise capacity - Reduce Symptoms - Optimize functional status > Increase participation - improve psychological well-being > Reduce health care costs
*By stabilizing/reversing systemic manifestations of disease
Pulmonary Rehab - For who
> Any COPD patient with functional disability (3+ on medical research council (MRC) dyspnoea scale)
+ anyone that will benefit
> Exclusion Criteria
- Unstable angina
- unstable diabetes
- uncontrolled blood pressure
- uncontrolled arrythmia
- MI within six weeks of starting
*Can use BP/HR monitors + Borg/RPE scales to monitor patients during class
Structure of Pulmonary Rehab
> 6-12 week program (within a month of discharge if appropriate)
2x per week
Combo of exercise classes and education
Doesn’t improve lung function - only improves efficiency of body with that function (ie won’t alter PFT scores)
Cardiac Rehab aims
> Relieve symptoms
Reduce risk
Enhance QoL
Increase knowledge and understanding
Cardiac Rehab - monitoring patients
> Measure Heart rate and BP as well as exercise tolerance using treadmill test (ecg whilst intensity is increased) or bruce protocol (intervals where intensity is increased - to exhaustion)
Patients are more at risk
