cardiomyopathy Flashcards
what are the three categories of cardiomyopathies?
- dilated
- hypertrophic
- restrictive
normal dig level is:
less than 2
what does dig do to heart?
slows HR
tell me about dilated cardiomyopathy
dilated chambers
most common type
mostly affects middle aged men
systolic dysfunction:
high volumes of blood but low EF (which is percentage of blood being ejected with each contraction)
–low EF means low cardiac output, which leads to left sides HF–> resp complications
eventually–>r sided–> poor prognosis
A fib may develop in addition to embolism
Ventricular dysrythmias
treatment for dilated cardiomyopathy?
treatment of HF: Diuretics, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta blockers, cardiac glycosides (digoxin positive inotrope)
- Vasodilators
- anti-dysrhythmics
- implantable ICD
tell me about hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
A thickening of the septum and ventricle walls
May be Non-obstructed or Obstructed
-likely cause of death in young athletes (athletes are hyper to win the trophy)
treatment for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
do: beta-blockers, anti-dysrythmics, calcium channel blockers
what do you avoid with obstructed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
vasodilators, cardiac glycosides, diuretics, nitrates, and positive inotropes (dig)
normal BNP level?
<100
