Cardiology Flashcards
Coronary Artery Disease
Conditions that narrow or block the arteries of the heart
Acute Coronary Syndrome
Lack of oxygen (ischemia) in the heart muscle
Thrombus
A blood clot within a vessel
Myocardial Infarction
A condition where a portion of the myocardium muscle dies as a result of oxygen starvation
Congestive Heart Failure
The failure of the heart to pump efficiently, leading to excessive blood or fluids in the lungs, body or both
Systemic Vascular Resistance (SVR)
The pressure in the peripheral blood vessels that the heart must overcome in order to pump blood into the system
Stroke Volume
The amount of blood ejected from the heart in one contraction
Preload
How much blood is returned to the heart before a contraction
Contractility
The force of the contraction
Afterload
How much pressure the heart has to pump against in order to force blood out into the system
Cardiac Output
Heart Rate x stroke volume
Cardiac Tamponade
Compression of the heart by the periocardial sac filling with fluids or blood and the ventricles can’t expand and pump enough blood
Shock
The inability to supply cells with 02 and nutrients, inadequate removal of waste products from cells
