Cardiology 2: Conditions and Drugs Flashcards
What is Dilated Cardiomyopathy? What deficiency can this disease be associated with?
Weakened and enlarged heart that can be associated with a taurine deficiency.
What is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy? What feline condition can this be associated with?
Enlargement of the heart muscle. Can be associated with hyperthyroidism.
What happens during Congestive Heart Failure?
The heart can no longer efficiently pump blood and the lungs fill up with fluid (pulmonary edema)
Which heart condition is common in horses? What is it caused by and how is it resolved? What does it look like on an ECG?
Second-degree AV Block: an arrhythmia caused by a delay at the AV node. Caused by high vagal tone and may resolve with exercise. On ECG, may see a P wave with no QRS.
What is Ventricular Fibrillation?
Uncoordinated contraction of the cardiac muscle in the ventricles.
Loop diuretic used in congestive heart failure
Furosemide (Lasix)
Potassium sparing diurectic
Spironolactone
Ace inhibitor/vasodilator used in conjunction with a diuretic to treat CHF
Enalapril
Inodilator used to treat CHF in dogs
Vetmedin (Pimobendan)
Anticholinergic used to increase heart rate
Atropine
Venodilator. Topical, used to treat CHF (wear gloves!)
Nitroglycerine
Used to treat hypertension.
Sildenafil (Viagra)
Used to treat ventricular tachycardia or VPCs (ventricular premature contractions)
Lidocaine
A cardiac glycoside, but can be toxic
Digoxin
