cardiology Flashcards
types of heart failure by classification
- by ejection ( systolic or diastolic)
- right/left sided
- by time (acute/chronic)
what is systolic heart failure
inability of the ventricles to contract normally
what is diastolic heart failure
inability of the ventricles to relax and fill normally
what is acute heart failure
acute exacerbation of chronic heart failure
clinical presentation of left sided heart failure
pulmonary oedema - dyspnoea, orthopnoea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea, bi-basal fine crackles
clinical presentation of right sided heart failure
peripheral oedema
raised JVP
hepatomegaly
weight gain due to fluid retention
anorexia (cardiac cachexia)
causes of systolic heart failure
IHD
dilated cardiomyopathy
arrythmias
myocarditis
causes of diastolic heart failure
cardiac tamponade
constrictive pericarditis
blood tests to do for heart failure
