Cardio Respiratory System Flashcards
Define the term diastole
Term used to describe the relaxation phase of the cardiac cycle. The heart ventricles are relaxed and fill with blood
Define the term systole
Term used to describe the contraction phase of the Cardiac cycle. The ventricles contract and pump blood to the arteries
Define the term stroke volume
The volume of blood that leaves the heart during each contraction
Define the term health
A state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease
Define the term fitness
The ability to meet the demands of and environment
Heart rate (HR)
The number of time the heart beats per minute
Anticipatory rise
Slight increase in heart rate usually before activity starts due to the expectation of exercise
Define the term cardiac output
The amount of blood the heart pumps out. Cardiac output = stroke volume x heart rate
How does exercise and being fit improve your physical health
. Allows the development of more red blood cells
. Weight loss
. Bone development
. Increase metabolic rate
. Decreased resting heart right
. Reduced risk of cancers, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes
Pathway of blood
1.Vena cava
2.Right atrium
3.Tricuspid valve
4.Right ventricle
5.Pulmonary valve
6.Pulmonary artery
7.Lungs
8.Left atrium
9.Bicuspid valve
10.Left ventricle
11. Semi lunar valve
12. Aorta
13. Body
Differences between trained and untrained athletes
. Trained athletes have higher red blood cell concentration meaning more oxygen is transported to the working muscles
. Atriums and ventricles become larger to hold more blood
Trained athletes have a higher stroke volume as their left ventricle has a higher volume
. Heart rate vis lower in a trained athlete
What is bradycardia
The term bradycardia means a heart rate lower than 60bpm
What is the average stroke volume for and untrained person
112ml
What is the average stroke volume for a trained athlete
130ml
What is the average stroke volume for an endurance athlete
180ml
