Q

What Cardiac medication can reduce hypoglycaemic awareness in diabetic patient on insulin?

A
  • Beta-blockers reduce hypoglycaemic awareness
  • theoretically suppress all of the adrenergically mediated symptoms of hypoglycemia and thus can lead to unawareness of hypoglycemic events.

BB can also cause

Hypotension
Bradycardia
HYPOGLYCEMIA
Hypothermia

This is why we treat BB overdose with Atropine, Glucagon, and high dose insulin in 10% dextrose
