Cardiac/Thorax/Lung/Trach Care and Suctioning Flashcards
Define heave/lift
a sustained forceful thrust of the ventricle during systole which could signify ventricular hypertrophy
Define thrill
a palpable vibration which could signify turbulent blood flow.
Define murmur
a blowing, swooshing sound that occurs with turbulent blood flow in the heart or great vessels caused by a cardiac disorder
Define tactile fremitus
a palpable vibration of the posterior chest which should feel the same with side to side comparison with decreasing fremitus with downward progression
Define bruit
A blowing, swishing sound indicating turbulance from a vascular disorder
Define oropharyngeal suctioning
suctioning the oropharynx of a patient who can cough effectively but cannot clear secretions by expectorating.
Define nasopharyngeal suctioning
suctioning the nasopharynx of a patient who can cough effectively but cannot clear secretions by expectorating.
Define orotracheal suctioning
the act of passing a sterile catheter through the mouth of a patient who cannot manage secretions by coughing and does not have an artificial airway.
Define nasotracheal suctioning
the act of passing a sterile catheter through the nose of a patient who cannot manage secretions by coughing and does not have an artificial airway.
Define tracheal suctioning
suctioning that is completed using a sterile catheter through an artificial airway
