Cardiac Anatomy and Physiology Flashcards
Arteries carry blood?
Away from the heart
Veins carry blood?
Into the heart
What are the first set of valves?
Atrioventricular Valves (AV)
They are between the atria and ventricles
- Right side is the Tricuspid valve
- Left side is the Bicuspid valve
What are the second set of valves?
Semilunar Valves (SL)
- Between the left ventricle and aorta is the aortic valve
- Between the right ventricle and pulmonary trunk is the pulmonary valve
What are the functions of the valves?
To prevent the back flow of blood
What are the three layers of the heart?
- Pericardium
- Myocardium
- Endocardium
Explain pulmonary circulation
Pulmonary circulation carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle via the pulmonary trunk to the lungs alveoli and returns oxygenated blood through the pulmonary veins to the left atrium
Explain systemic circulation
Systemic circulation carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle via the aorta to all parts of the body and returns deoxygenated blood to the right atrium
What is the Pericardium divided into?
Fibrous layer, parietal layer, visceral layer
What is the myocardium?
The cardiac muscle which pumps blood
What is the fibrous layer?
Outer most layer which protects the heart and anchors it to surrounding structures
What is between the visceral and parietal layers?
A thin pericardial fluid lubricates the pericardial
cavity which is between the visceral and parietal pericardium
What divides your heart?
Septum
What makes the first “lub” sound?
It made by your tricuspid valve and your bicuspid valve closing
What makes the second “dub” sound?
It is made by the aortic and pulmonary semi luna valves closing
