What are some contraindications to TEE?
A
- Known esophageal strictures, perforation, lacerations or large diverticula
- Cervical spine instability
- Inability to protect the airway (if not intubated).
- Loose teeth (need a dental exam and possible extraction before proceeding)
Relative
- Dysphagia or odynophagia
- Recent upper GI bleeding
- Extensive radiation to the chest and mediastinum
- Esophageal varices

Complications of TEE
A
From medications:
- Hypotension from sedating medications
- Methemoglobinemia
- Respiratory depression
- Arrhythmia
- Paradoxical reaction to sedating medications
- Infection/Bleeding (from IV insertion site for IV medications)
- Death (1/10,000)
From the probe:
- Esophageal trauma, tear or perforation (1/1000 patients)
- Aspiration
- Upper GI bleeding
- Dental injury, aspiration of a loose tooth
- Displacement of endotracheal and nasogastric tubes
