Carcinoma In Situ Flashcards
What are carcinomas in situ?
Malignancies that are contained within the basement membrane tissue - seen as premalignant condition
Are they typically symptomatic at presentation?
No
Typically found on imaging
What are the 2 main types in breast tissue ?
Ductal carcinoma in situ DCIS
Lobular carcinoma in situ LCIS
What is the most common type of non-invasive breast malignancy ?
Ductal carcinoma in situ
DCIS comprises what percentage of all breast cancers diagnosed?
20%
What percentage of those with DCIS will develop invasive disease ?
20-30%
How is DCIS often detected?
During screening
How does DCIS appear on a mammogram?
Microcalcifications - clusters or linear and branching
Often shows central necrosis
How is DCIS confirmed?
On biopsy
How is DCIS managed?
Localised: complete wide excision - ensuring surrounding tissue have no residual disease
Widespread/ multi focal : normally complete mastectomy
What is lobular carcinoma in situ a malignancy of?
The secretory lobules of the breast that is contained within the basement membrane
Is LCIS or DCIS at more risk of developing an invasive breast malignancy?
LCIS
Is LCIS usually diagnosed before or post-menopause?
Before
Less than 10% post menopause
Is LCIS associated with microcalcifications?
No
Is LCIS usually asymptomatic?
Yes
