Carburization Flashcards
1
Q
What steel is not suitable for carburization? Which is?
A
high alloyed high hardenability; low carbon
2
Q
What happens during heat treatment of carburized parts?
A
long soaking at high temp –> coarse austenite grains –> low toughness
3
Q
How do you improve the toughness and strength?
A
air cool from carburizing temp–>reheat to slightly above A3 temp and soak to produce fine austenite–> quench and temper
4
Q
What is a problem in carburized steels?
A
internal oxidation: affects fatigue resistance
5
Q
Is high surface CC good or bad in carburized steels? Why?
A
It’s bad, because it can cause a network of carbides along GBs and will increase retained austenite
