Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
1
Q
Alcohol from a carboxylic acid
A
-LiAlH4 in dry ether
-specifically 4[H]
- Reduction reaction
-forms PRIMARY ALCOHOL
2
Q
Acyl chloride from carboxylic acid
A
Reagents : PCL5 or SOCl2
Conditions : dry (otherwise carboxylic acid is reformed from acyl chloride)
3
Q
Ester from a carboxylic acid
A
Reagents : alcohol , conc H2SO4 catalyst
Conditions : heat under reflux
(Condensation reaction)
Reaction is reversible!!!
R-COOH + R-OH<=> R-COO + H2O
4
Q
What is the role of the sulfuric acid catalyst in esterification
A
- It forces equilibrium to favour the ester
- as sulphuric acid is a dehydrating agent, hence decreasing [H2O]
-increasing the yield of the ester
5
Q
How do you produce a carboxylic acid from a grignard reagent?
A
-react the grignard with CO2
-in acidic conditions
6
Q
Carboxylate salts from a carboxylic acid
A
- Reacting the acid with any base
- metal , alkali , metal carbonate , metal oxide
