Carbonyl Flashcards
What does aldehyde reduced to
Primary alcohol
What does aldehyde oxidise
Carboxylic acid
What does ketone reduced
Secondary alcohol
Aldehyde and ketone reduced to alcohol requirements
LiAlH4 (lithium aluminum hydride) in dry ether
Aldehyde to carboxylic acid acidified potassium dichromate (VI)
Orange to green
+6 to +3
Aldehyde to carboxylic acid fehling reagent
Deep blue to red
Aldehyde to carboxylic acid Benedict solution
Deep blue solution to red precipitate
Aldehyde to carboxylic acid tolled reagent
Colourless to silver mirror
Positive result for fehling and Benedict reagent for aldehyde and ketone
Aldehyde
Blue to brick red precipitate
Ketone
Stay blue
Tollen reagent
Aldehyde
Silver mirror forms
ketone
Negative
Test for CH3CO ( iodoform reaction)
Aldehyde (ethanal) and in methyl ketone (carbonyl group in the second carbon)
Heated with alkaline solution of iodine
Forms yellow precipitate with iodoform
Iodoform test and alcohol
If an alcohol contains a R-CH(OH)-CH3 group will also produce a yellow precipitate
—> all methyl secondary alcohol (exam-2-ol) and the primary alcohol ethanol
Test for carbonyl compounds
2,4-DNPH
Aldehyde and ketone undergo condensation reaction
Deep orange precipitate positive results
2,4-DNPH melting point
Used to identify individuals carbonyl which specific aldehyde or ketone had reacted with 2,4-DNPH
Which then can be compared to literature value
