Carbonates, Halides, Sulfates Flashcards
How to test for carbonates, halides and sulfates.
How do you test for halides?
Add dilute nitric acid to the unknown solution to remove carbonate ions. Then add silver nitrate. If halide ions are present, a precipitate will form.
How do you test for carbonates?
Add a dilute acid to the unknown solution. Pass the gas created through a tube into lime water. If the lime water turns cloudy then carbonate ions are present.
What halide produces a cream precipitate?
Bromide (Br-)
What halide produces a yellow precipitate?
Iodine (I-)
What halide produces a white precipitate?
Chloride (Cl-)
How do you test for sulfates?
Add dilute hydrochloric acid to the unknown solution. Then add barium chloride solution. If a white precipitate forms, sulfate ions are present.
What acid do you use to test for halides?
Dilute nitric acid
What solution do you use to test for carbonates?
Lime water
What acid do you use to test for sulfates?
Dilute hydrochloric acid
What substance AFTER adding dilute nitric acid do you add to test for halides?
Silver nitrate
What substance AFTER adding dilute hydrochloric acid do you add to test for sulfates?
Barium chloride
